Antiscalant Testing

Smart Solutions to keep the water flowing

Scale formation is endemic to many systems and is causes blocking of pipes and equipment, unnecessary downtime and wear and tear on equipment. When a scale event occurs it critical to get to the bottom of what happened so that it can be prevented in the future. Historically scale control relied on the experience of the advisor to recommend a product, but no more. Water IQ is able to conduct laboratory scaling experiments to determine the most effective product to treat your system.

A Water IQ scale test includes:

  • Benchmark scale formation test without treatment
  • Product testing at range of different dosages
  • Optional product blending program
  • Onsite water map and testing to understand scale drivers

    Independent

    • Independent results you can trust
    • No affiliations with specific vendors or products

    Comprehensive

    • Lab based product testing for calcite, gypsum and other common scales
    • Water modelling recommendation using industry standard tools
    • Scale cleaning studies
    • Water testing and survey to identify driving force

    Expert

    • Experience across the globe solving different scale problems
    • Test new products before trusting them to your plant

    Benefits

    • Gain confidence in your treatment program
    • Maximize water availability
    • Reduce maintenance and down time

Do you provide scale treatment products?

At WaterIQ we pride ourselves on being able to provide expert independent advice, as such we don’t represent any particular chemical supplier. Generally, we recommend that you request products from different vendors to be screened and as such you are starting with the best that each supplier can offer. WaterIQ will then independently compare these to give you trusted results and stress test the treatment program. The last thing you want is to have a product that is only suited to a narrow performance window.

However, we are also able to work with suppliers to get product samples if that’s required.

Why would we need independant verification?

Most vendors will test their products to find the best performing. However, when comparing a number of suppliers, its critical to have independent and trustworthy advice on which to make your decisions. After all, once selected you will likely be working with a water treatment supplier for many years. Let’s make sure it’s the right one!

Why do we need a system audit?

Scale formation is often driven by different water sources interacting with equipment and processes on your site. As they say, prevention is better than the cure, so we strive to identify the underlying cause and find ways of mitigating that before moving to optimize the chemical treatment.

Finally, water treatment is not just a chemical process. Many parts come together to help maximize performance including the maintenance of equipment, operational procedures and responses to changes, the treatment chemicals, changes in feed water, service and supply. By its very nature all these systems have different responsible parties, thus a formalized system audit makes sure that you’re getting the full picture of your plant and helps align the different stakeholders to improving performance.

What is involved in lab testing of antiscalants?

Lab testing of antiscalants involves mimicking the scale formation process in a laboratory environment. To do this we take water samples from your process and equilibrate them into conditions that mimic your plant, we will then provide an external scale driver (such as a dose or pH change) and evaluate the effectiveness of the anti-scalants based on the different scale control functions of:

    • Threshold inhibition
    • Chelation (or sequestration)
    • Dispersion
    • Crystal modification

While it’s never possible to completely mimic what is going on in a plant, this process is one more precaution to help you make sure that your making a process change armed with the best information.
